Flyover Estate

Design Request:
Clients desired a custom new home on a 10 acre lot designed with spaces that would support their hobbies and their lifestyle.
Design Challenges:
-
The program consists of a number of unique spaces such as two offices and a library, an accessible guest suite w/ three foot doors and proper clearance radii, and a 7 car and 1 tractor garage with a workshop and lift.
-
The majority of the living spaces are desired to have views of the backyard, and there is to be no view from the front door to the great room.
-
It is desired to keep most of the program above grade as the clients do not use their current basement as much as they anticipated.
Design Solution:
-
Based on the program and discussion with the clients, it was decided to proceed with a Scandinavian modern aesthetic.
-
The massing of the home consists of a long linear spine that reflects the circulation the home. This "spine" intersects and counteracts with the long gable of the garage. Front to rear high-pitched gables (including the garage) intersect the circulation gable.
-
The garage was divided into a frequent-use car garage and an infrequent-use car garage with the workshop between and an area for bikes, trash cans, etc.
